About Us
The History of The New Hope Christian
Baptist Church
God found favor and gave the vision of The New Hope Christian Church to the late Rev. Molester Hunter, Sr. Rev. Hunter along with his wife, the late Dorothy Hunter. After much prayer and preparation the New Hope Christian Baptist Church opened its doors on March 19, 1967 at 1901 W. Franklin Street. The charters members were Elizabeth Kelly, Vernon and Margaret Mitchell, Julia Bing, Elizabeth Watkins, Sterling and Lillie Walton, and George and Ernestine Day, and Sinclair and Christine Edmonds along with the children of these families.
The New Hope family grew at this location. It was here that the first Board of Deacons, Trustee Ministry, Music Ministry, Ushers Board, Sunday Schools and Wednesday Night Bible Class were established. The members of the church grew together in the knowledge of Jesus Christ through constant prayer and dedicated bible study. After receiving the news from the city that the current edifice was going to be razed to place a new highway, the New Hope family to moved to 3008 Oakley Avenue in 1972.
Oakley Avenue was a special place. The Rabbi who previously owned the building remarked to Rev. Hunter and the Deacons that, the Spirit of God was in that place and that they would always feel Gods presence. This statement proved to be very true. At this location everyone who came could feel the presence of God and the anointing that prevailed among Gods people. The church experienced enormous growth.
In March of 1982, the New Hope family moved to its current location, 520 North Chapel Gate Lane. The church is listed as a historical landmark in Baltimore City. Church growth continued and other ministries were established. In 1992 Rev. Hunters vision of a baptismal pool became reality when it was installed, dedicated, and the first baptism was held. Also, in 1992 six ministers were ordained. As a result one son, Rev. Alfred Wiggins is now the Pastor of Redeeming Love Baptist Church. On May 30, 1998, New Hopes first lady, Rev. Dorothy Hunter entered into eternally rest, leaving a legacy of music, missionary, and Word ministry.
Shortly afterwards Rev. Hunter begin to realize that it was time for him to slow down and enjoy the harvest of his labors. On January 28, 2001 Rev. Hunter elevated to Pastor Emeritus. Pastor Hunter entered into eternal rest on April 21, 2007. In February 2001 Rev. Timothy Tillman became the second pastor of New Hope. However, on June 15, 2004 Rev. Tillman resigned and established his own ministry. The New Hope family found themselves without a Pastor. But God had three men who would graciously step in and cover the church and guide them through the pulpit search. We will forever praise God for the Pastoral Covering of Pastors Elmore E. Warren, Jr., Russell Groves, and Edward Ferguson.
After months of searching and praying, God in His infinite wisdom directed the Pastoral Search Committee to recommend that the church accept an interim Pastor. On September 7, 2005, the New Hope family welcomed Rev. Vernon Shelton as Interim Pastor along with his beautiful wife Laprena and their family. In December of 2005 the members decided to accept Rev. Shelton as Acting Pastor. Rev. Shelton did an exemplary job of preaching and teaching and especially nurturing Gods people. On September 16, 2006 Rev. Shelton accepted Gods call to become the Pastor of the New Hope family and was installed as the third Pastor.
With Pastor Shelton came a renewed burst of joy and energy to go to a higher level in God. Under Pastor Sheltons guidance the church has experienced enormous growth. New ministries have been birthed such as the Greeters Ministry, Security Ministry, Women of Abundant Hope (WOAH) Ministry, House of Hope Outreach Ministry, Childrens Church, Youth and Young Adult Ministry (YAYA), Media Ministry, and Armor Bearers Ministry. Other ministries have been rejuvenated and continue to thrive such as The Deaconess Ministry, The Dance Ministry, and The Mime Ministry. The church has completed major projects such as restoration of the Baptismal pool, beautification and renovation of the Rev. Molester J. Hunter Fellowship Hall, installation of a brand new furnace, and more. Pastor Shelton has recently instituted The New Hope Discipleship Program, a two year course for those seeking to grow deeper in the Word of the Lord. We are a unified body of Christ where excellence is not the standard but the minimum.
God continues to do marvelous things in this branch of Zion and His Holy Spirit continues to reign supreme in this place. TO GOD BE ALL THE GLORY FOR THE GREAT THINGS HE HAS DONE!
